Airbnb living room interior design by erica ooh designs

Living room styling is the icing on the cake of a room's design. While you might have all the major furniture pieces, those finishing touches can make or break the space – but they take skill to get it right. In order to master the art of styling your living room. you have to figure out the right accessories to add.

Here are 6 last details to style your living room like a pro and take your living room from dull to dazzling.

Tip #1 - Pull in Colors with Throw Pillows

Throw pillows are the perfect way to tie in the different colors in your living room. The perfect pillow story consists of the right display of the colors in the room. I like to switch things up by using a pair of solid color pillows, a pair of textured and a pair of patterned pillows.

Give your sofa a unique look by covering the factory throw pillows with new pillow covers.

Tip #2 - Warm up the room with a good size area rug

Rugs warm up a room and help to anchor the furniture in your living room. They are also easy to switch out when you want to redecorate. The right size rug can make a living room appear bigger. To determine the size, measure your living room to make sure all of the furniture fits on top of the rug. If this isn't possible (quirky layout/budget restraints), it's okay to have the front legs of just the major furniture pieces on the rug and the back legs off. All the legs of smaller pieces should be on the rug.

Area rugs on wall-to-wall carpet can help to define a space (i.e. open floor plan living room to den, play area, WFH space)

Tip #3 - Install floor to ceiling curtains

Curtains make a room feel complete. If your living room has a lot of solid colors, try tying in the colors with printed curtains. If your living room has lots of prints and patterns, solid color curtains will help anchor the room.

Install your ceilings no more than 6" from the ceiling. If you're using curtain rods, hand the rods at least 6" from the side of your windows.

Tip #4 - Style your coffee table

Coffee tables are the most used tables in living rooms, but when not in use it can sometimes look bare. A simple way to style your coffee table without the clutter is with:

  • a plant/some flowers (real or artificial)

  • a few coffee table books (2-3 is a good start)

  • a candle

  • a tray

Using a tray helps to ground all the different elements to prevent them from floating around the table.

Tip #5 - Adorn large walls with the right size wall art

Your walls are a good opportunity to add character to your living room. Choose the right type and size of wall art. Don't put up beach seashell art in a mid-century modern living room. When it comes to sizing, a good rule of thumb is to cover at least 2/3 of the width of the wall. Try to put wall art on just the large walls in the room. If you have a bunch of smaller wall decor that you would like to display, try creating a gallery wall on a single wall.

Leave a few wall bare so the eyes have somewhere to rest.

Tip #6 - Add some greenery

Plants make for the perfect finishing touch in any living room. If you can't get anything else, make sure you get some plants. If you have a good amount of space, add a floor plant (artificial or real, it's up to you. If you're limited on space, a surface table plant like a succulent arrangement is perfect.

Green plants adds freshness to any room without breaking the bank.
